The reason why England players will wear black armbands in the match against Finland

England’s players will once again wear black armbands for the match against Finland in the League of Nations, after doing so in the 2-0 victory over Ireland.

The ‘Three Lions’ took to the pitch in Dublin wearing black armbands in memory of former manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, who died last month aged 76.

Eriksson announced in January that he has been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer.

The Swede took charge of England between 2001 and 2006 and led them to three competitions, including the 2006 World Cup.

After leaving that position, Eriksson had a few more adventures in English football with Manchester City and Leicester, as well as a brief spell as director of football at Notts County.

The English Football Association has planned to pay tribute to the Swede before today’s (Tuesday) match against Finalnda.

As part of this tribute, England players will wear black armbands during the match.

“Nobody can forget the 5-1 win in Munich against Germany under Sven. He will always be known and remembered for his outstanding work with England and his contribution to the game,” said FA chief executive Mark Bellingham.

“On behalf of my colleagues at the Federation, past and present, our thoughts are with his friends and family today,” he concluded./Football Match Up/
